Op 9 oktober heeft de Zweedse academie van wetenschappen bekend gemaakt dat de Nobelprijs voor natuurkunde 2001 is toegekend aan Eric Cornell, Wolfgang Ketterle en Carl Wieman voor "the achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute gases of alkali atoms and for early fundamental studies of the properties of the condensate". Cornell en Wieman zijn verbonden aan het Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA) in Boulder Colorado. Ketterle is hoogleraar bij MIT.
