Evolutionary niching techniques obtain multiple diverse solutions, which allow the decision-maker to consider various high-quality conceptual designs. We consider an evolutionary niching algorithm, based on a state-of-the-art derandomized Evolution Strategy, the Covariance Matrix Adaptation, and apply it to a challenging high-dimensional physics problem, namely Femtosecond Laser Pulse Shaping. We show that the niching algorithm finds highly-satisfying solutions which represent different conceptual laser pulse designs.
