Drying oil paint samples from test panels and paintings were analysed with off-line transethylation / silylation derivatisation on-column GC/MS. All non-cross-linked fatty acid components of the paint film are characterised in this way. Using this method, glycerol bound fatty acids, diacids and oxidised C18 fatty acids are ethylated whereas hydrolysed compounds are silylated. Using the ratio of both derivatives the degree of hydrolysis is monitored, and an indication is given of the severity of deesterification processes which have taken place in the paint film.
